Chess Sensation: Nine-Year-Old Aarit Kapil Draws Against Magnus Carlsen
In a stunning display of skill, nine-year-old Indian chess player Aarit Kapil managed to secure a draw against world number one Magnus Carlsen in the 'Early Titled Tuesday' online chess tournament.
Kapil, who recently placed second in the Under-9 National Championship, put up a formidable fight against the five-time world champion, even pushing Carlsen into a disadvantageous position.
Ultimately, the young Indian player was unable to capitalize on his advantage due to time constraints, resulting in a draw in a rook versus two minor pieces endgame.
The young chess talent from Delhi participated in the tournament while in Georgia, where he is currently competing in the under-10 World Championship. Kapil has started strong, winning his first two rounds, and will continue his quest on Wednesday.
While Kapil's draw was a highlight, Indian player V Pranav emerged as the winner of the 'Early Titled Tuesday' tournament, accumulating 10 points out of a possible 11.
American Grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann and Carlsen both finished with 9.5 points, with Niemann taking second place after tiebreaks.
In other news, Magnus Carlsen has recently achieved a groundbreaking milestone in freestyle chess, reaching a historic 2900 rating, a feat unmatched in any chess format.
Carlsen, who has maintained the world number one position for nearly 15 years, achieved his peak classical chess rating of 2882 in May 2014.
The new freestyle chess ratings are managed by the Freestyle Chess organization, independent of FIDE, the global chess governing body.
Carlsen jokingly remarked on achieving the 2900 rating in freestyle chess, stating, "My wife (Ella Victoria) is way more attracted to me now that I've achieved 2900,"
The freestyle ratings calculation incorporated data from five tournaments: Weissenhaus 2024, Singapore 2024, Weissenhaus 2025, Paris 2025, and Karlsruhe 2025, encompassing 578 players who participated in at least one event over the past two years.
Following Carlsen (2909), Hikaru Nakamura (2818), and Fabiano Caruana (2804), Indian chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa currently holds the fourth position with 2773 points.
