The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with intense competition, as three Test series have already begun to shape the leaderboard. While Australia and England have taken early leads, India and West Indies are looking to gain ground.
Australia and England currently hold the top two positions in the WTC standings, both with a perfect 100% points percentage after securing wins in their opening matches. Sri Lanka is in third place after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh with a victory and a draw. Bangladesh, with one draw and one loss, is positioned fourth.
Reigning champions South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to begin their WTC campaigns in this cycle.
India's campaign began with a setback, despite a spirited effort at Headingley. Although the team had five centurions in the match, they suffered a defeat as England completed a remarkable chase to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
England successfully chased down a target of 371, propelled by a strong opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith steered the chase to victory with an unbroken partnership. India will reflect on a middle-order collapse and missed opportunities that ultimately proved costly.
Following the match, Shubman Gill acknowledged that India had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. He mentioned that the team had aimed for a larger lead, but a lack of runs from the lower order hindered their plans.
India will now focus on the second Test at Edgbaston, with the aim of swiftly recovering and revitalizing their WTC campaign. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table alongside West Indies.
The current WTC cycle commenced with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
